What Kind Of Surfboards Are There?

There are so many different shapes of surfboards out there that it’s hard to make head or tails of it all. Let’s look at some of the more prominent style of boards available. Within each of these styles there can be a big variation in the length, width and depth of these boards. It’s important to get professional advise about which board will be suitable for your skill level and for your size.

Thruster

These surfboards are the standard for professional riders and offer the best performance for maneuvering on waves. They are shorter and thinner than other boards. Because of this, most of the “tricks” are done using the board. These boards are not advised for beginners due to the experience and strength needed to catch waves.

Longboard

Longboards are more akin to the traditional design of a surfboard. They are normally well over 8 ft tall and have a rounded nose and tail. They are the board of choice for beginners due to their buoyance but are also enjoyed by experienced riders. Because these boards aren’t as maneuverable as shorter boards many of the “tricks” are performed by the rider on the board.

Mini Mal

Simply a shorter version of the Longboard it offers the rider more capabilities for tuning on waves. This is because of their shorter length and narrower rails. They can also be a good beginners board.

Fish

These surfboards are a characterized by a “fish” tail where the end of the board is cut in a v shape like the end of a fishes tail. These boards are typically thinker than a thruster and also wider.

Gun

These have grown in popularity by the big wave surfing community. Because of their shape they are easier to handle at high speeds and offers the rider more control. They have a narrow nose and tail.

Summary

Which ever board you use, just make sure you get out there and have some fun. And make sure you’re courteous to other riders.
