There are plenty of things to consider when choosing a Dietitian. After all, it’s your health that’s on the line.
How long have they been practicing? Whilst this isn’t a guarantee of quality it does give you another sense of expertise. The more experience a dietitian has, the more likely they are to know what diet is suited to your situation.
The main way to judge a dietitian and their abilities will be in your first consultation. Sus them out and make sure you feel confident with their advice. If you can’t trust what they’re telling you then the information is worthless.
What other ancillary services do they offer? Some dietitians also have equipment to test your body composition and some run nutrition class to help with your education. Some dietitians will work with couple or even whole families.
Accredited Dietitians have to get their qualifications through a University course that’s accredited by the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA). If you are going to get a rebate from Medicare or your Private Health Fund then the dietitian must be accredited.
As with most things that we buy, price is also a consideration. The key is to look at both their initial consultation fee as well as there on going rate. Prices can vary significantly so it’s worth talking to a couple of Dietitians. Many will offer a discounted or reduced total rate if you go with a friend or as a family.
Also, depending on your private health cover you may be eligible for a rebate so check with your health fund.
There are plenty of factors to think about when choosing a Dietitian. At the end of the day it comes down to your overall feeling of them and the competence that will make you comfortable with their advice. Just make sure you see more than one opinion so that you have something to compare.
