Equipment You Need For Surfing

Let’s take a look at some of the equipment that you might use while surfing on the Central Coast. Some of it’s essential and others are just nice to have.

Surfboard

Without this, your not surfing. There are plenty of shapes and sizes to suit all body shapes and levels of experience. The other key factor is w

For more information on boards available see our post on the [Kinds of Surfboards].

Wax

This is an integral part of your surfing kit (unless your board is a foamie). Wax provides the grip on the top of your surfboard so that when you stand up, you don’t just slip off. When you get wax, you will also want to purchase a wax comb. As you continue to add new wax it will build up on the board, a comb will help remove some of the excess wax.

Leg Rope (Leash)

Unless you want to continually swim to shore when you fall of your board (when you’re a beginner you’ll spend more time off it than on it) then you’ll want a leg rope for your board. It’s a simple rope made from polyurethane that has a bit of stretch in it to reduce jerking when your board gets pulled by a wave.

Sunscreen

Given the intensity of the Australian sun and the rising number of skin cancers, wearing sunscreen is an absolute necessity. Generally look for a water resistant spf30+ sunscreen that lasts for 4 hours. You won’t get that long as some will wash off but it’s unlikely you’ll be out there for 4 hours (if so, you either insanely fit or not catching enough waves).

Wetsuit

There are two main types of wetsuits – Spring or Steamer – with a wide range of other wetsuit types in between. The spring suit has short sleeves and short legs and is the equivalent of wearing a shirt and shorts in it’s coverage. These are usually used in summer as they don’t keep you too warm. The Steamer is a full body wetsuit that covers from your ankles to your wrist. This is normally warn in winter when the waters pretty cold.

Rashy

This is more of a comfort piece. It reduces the rubbing of your chest and back on your wetsuit. They also tend to be made from UV resistant material so if your not wearing a wetsuit a rashy can reduce the need to put sunscreen on. It also reduces the discomfort of having bare skin rubbing on the waxed top of your surfboard.
