Now that we’ve taken a look what the outside of a café let’s delve into the inside and understand what makes for a great café.
The way the café is setup can make a huge difference to the experience. If your sitting down to have a conversation with someone or you just want to do your own work then you’ll want a space that’s relatively peaceful and doesn’t interrupt you. There’s nothing worse than sitting next to the queue or coffee grinder, it’s like trying to have a conversation while sitting at the end of an airport runway.
If it’s nice outside then outdoor seating can let you take advantage of the Central Coast outdoors. A great café will let you take in the soothing sea breeze from the ocean or breath the fresh clean air from the surrounding bush.
That said, it must still cater for those us in a rush and don’t have time enjoy the serenity. Therefore the layout must accommodate for people who just want to get and then out with order with little fuss and no dodging tables or other customers.
We certainly can’t forget the ‘look and feel’ of a great coffee shop. While this should be open for various styles, the underlying theme is that it’s inviting, relaxing and friendly.
In accompanying the design of a coffee shop, there should also be a great line up of music played at a level that doesn’t overpower a conversation and doesn’t leave an awkward silence in the room. The music needs to be motivating and inspiring.
Being busy is a very good sign that it could be a good café (unless it’s just because it’s the only one within cooee).
What makes a good café great is that despite how busy the café gets, it’s still pleasant to visit. A great café has lots of customers but it doesn’t affect service to the point where you’re waiting for 30 minutes (or more) to get served. It’s the kind of place that despite the traffic you can still relax, or carry on your conversation without being bumpt, or be drowned out by the noise.
In part 4 we’re going to look at what a great café delivers while you’re there. Part 4: What does a Great Café on the Central Coast Serve Up
