What To Consider When Choosing A Painter

Painting your house or other items is a job that many people choose to do it themselves. Whilst it can save you money, getting a professional to do the job can be well worth the investment. It can save you a lot of time (your not doing the work and they can get the job done in half the time) and a lot of stress trying to get that nice finish. Not to mention the money you save on all the equipment required.

References, Recommendations And Experience

Does the painter have a couple of previous clients that you can contact to be used as references.

How long have they been painting for. The longer they’ve been in business the more likely they are to do a quality job (by no means a guarantee though). Like many trades, Painters rely heavily on word of mouth to generate business. If they get a bad reputation it will be difficult for them to remain in business for many years.

What Paint will they use

Find out what paint they will be using when they quote the job. Make sure that this is the actual paint that they end up using on your house. While it is rare for painters to switch to lower grade products it does happen and it’s worth checking. Just by simply asking during the quote will make them less likely to try because you have already shown that you pay attention to what it good.

Protection

How will the painter protect your assets (if your house is furnished). Will they cover everything, move things, etc.

Who does the painting

This is an odd question I know. But it’s worthwhile asking, will they be doing the painting or do they have employees who will be doing it. It shouldn’t make too much difference but you will find that if it’s there business and they’re doing the work then they will be more likely to do a good job because it’s there reputation on the line, not a companies.

Summary

As with all jobs around your home, it’s best to get 2-3 quotes. This gives you an opportunity to compare not just the cost but the professionalism and expertise of the painters. When it comes to the quotes don’t just look at the price. Look at the materials (brands) they will be using and consider how you felt when dealing with them. Given that you’ll be living with the finished job for 5+ years it’s worth investing that little bit extra to get the job done right.
