What Equipment Do You Need For Swimming?

When it comes to equipment, there’s not much for swimming. If you’ve got a set of swimmers, that’s all you need to get started. But if you want to take your swimming a bit more seriously or you want some extra comforts, here are a couple of different items that will make your swimming more enjoyable.

Swimmers (Essential)

Not too much has to be said here. While you could swim in normal clothes you’ll find very quickly that they weigh you down and cause a lot of drag in the water. It’s so bad that it’s not worth even trying. Swimmers vary in shapes and sizes (and cost). The variety you choose will depend on what kind of swimming you’ll be doing (recreational, professional, social, etc).

Swimming Cap

These are beneficial for two reasons. One, it keeps your hair relatively dry. Two, It removes the drag effect that your hair has while swimming through the water. If you’re just a recreational swimmer than this isn’t going to bother you but for professional swimmers where ever second counts, this is a must.

Goggles

Of the optional equipment that you could purchase, goggles will give you the biggest benefit. They allow you to see underwater and most importantly keep the chlorinated water (or salt water) out of your eyes. There are plenty of different shapes and sizes with most merchandise retailers sell them. They are fairly low cost and well worth the investment.

Ear Plugs

If you’re prone to getting ear infections or often struggle to get water out of your ears then ear plugs can be a great investment. There are a number of different options available so it’s worth talking to an experienced person at your local pool who will be able to give some more advise. Just be careful if you’re going to dive to any depths while wearing ear plugs as they can impair the ability for your ears to equalize.

Nose Clip

If you find that when you’re doing your turns that you get a large amount of water up your nose then it may be worthwhile getting a nose clip (though improving your technique normally solves the problem). They’re very simple to use and are normally just a plastic clip that goes onto your nose.
