Hobby stores sell a great range of products for collecting enthusiast, diehard fans, kids (and grownups) wanting to have some fun, and for people who want interesting challenges that test their spatial awareness skills.
In this brief article we’ll look at some of the different categories of products that you’ll find in a typical hobby shop.
These can be models of pretty much anything. The most popular models are cars, war vehicles, boats, and airplanes. But there so many other models that it’s worth checking out your local hobby shop to see what’s on offer.
Models come in a range of sizes and are described as a fraction of their normal size. Many cars come in sizes of 1/72, 1/32, etc. The closer the fraction is to 1/1, the larger or closer the model is to the actual size.
There are a wide range of vehicles that you can get as radio controlled. These include: Cars, Offroad Vehicles, Motorcycles, Boats, Airplanes, and even Helicopters.
These Remote Controlled Vehicles can be powered by fuel (usually petrol) or by battery power. There are advantages to both and it’s worth spending some time with an expert to work out which power option is the best for your situation.
The difference between these and diecast models is that you build these from their individual pieces rather than coming pre assembled. These can be anything from a small car with only a handful to pieces to a complex sailing ship requiring countless hours and days of meticulous construction. Whatever your interest or skill set, there is bound to be a model kit to suit you.
These can range from simple games and puzzles designed for young minds right through to some of the most challenging problems that’ll send you to the loony bin.
Many hobbyists carry a range of puzzles from 50 pieces through to 1,000’s of pieces. They also carry a wide range of other games and puzzles like: Rubik’s cube’s, chessboards, board games, Dungeons & Dragons, and more.
Like the other categories, figurines consist of a wide range of styles and sizes. They can come prepainted but there are many war games that have unpainted figures that you can customize to your own look and feel.
Not all shops sell craft supplies but most will at least sell paints. This is because of the figurines that often don’t come painted and various model kits that may also require you to add colours.
While this has been a general look at what you can expect to find in a hobby shop, it is by no means exhaustive and by no means does it guarantee that you will find all of these categories in every shop. It’s worth checking out your local hobbyist to see what they’ve got.
