Equipment Needs For Cycling On The Central Coast?

Obviously the first thing you need is a bike. But, there are different styles out there depending on what your doing. We’ll take a look at the main two shortly.

Along with a bike, you’ll also need a helmet as it’s against the law to ride a bike without one (You’ll want one anyway because of the added safety it provides).

From there you can get all kinds of accessories that will improve your riding enjoyment. This article will go through some of the different bike types available as well as mention a number of accessories that you may want to equip yourself with before Cycling on the Central Coast.

Mountain Biking

For mountain biking you’ll want a bike that has suspension and wide knobby tires to handle the dirt and mud. If you’re going to be riding your bike on the road as well, then consider getting a bike with locking suspension. You can lose some of your pedaling power if you ride with suspension on the road.

There are some great dirt tracks on the Central Coast . These are great for mountain biking and include places like the Ourimbah State Forest. Talk to your nearest bike shop for their recommendations.

Road Riding

If you’re only planning to ride your bike on the road then getting a specialized Road Bike could be the ideal option. These bikes are typically lighter and faster than mountain bikes so you can ride further with less effort. The Central Coast is slowly getting more bike lanes and if you want to get into regular riding then talk to your local bike shop as there are a number of cycling groups that ride every week.

Accessories

Along with your basic bike and helmet there are a number of other bits and pieces that you’ll want for your bike.

Water bottle – This is almost an essential for every bike. If you’re planning on riding for any length time then you’ll no doubt work up a thirst. Why not include a water bottle and holder for your bike so that you can keep yourself hydrated.

Puncture Repair kit – This includes the patches to repair your inner tube as well as a pump to re-inflate the tires. It’s almost a guarantee that at some stage in your riding life you’ll puncture a tire.

Bike Lock – If you’re planning on riding places and potentially leaving your bike by itself then it’s worthwhile investing in a bike lock. That way, you can keep your pride and joy, YOUR pride and joy.

Bike Pouch – These can be handy additions that store your puncture repair kit and bike lock so you never leave them at home.

There are plenty of other accessories for your bike but these are the main few that you may want to get early on in your riding efforts.

Best of luck with your new hobby (or sport) and be safe on the roads. And don’t forget to checkout local Central Coast Bike Shops.
