With so many beautiful locations it’s no surprise that the Central Coast is the first choice for many couples to have their wedding. It follows on that there’s no shortage of Central Coast wedding photographers. So with so much choice how do you choose the right photographer for you – the one to whom you will entrust capturing the memories of your special day?
Here are four things you must consider when you’re looking for a wedding photographer:
With the photos playing such a big part of most weddings you and your partner will be spending a lot of time with the photographer on the big day. With such an emotionally charged situation as a wedding you want a photographer who can relax you and put you at ease while remaining calm and collected themselves in the midst of all the hustle and bustle of the day and still deliver excellent photos.
Weddings are usually a once-in-a-lifetime event and you’ll probably treasure the memories of it for the rest of your life. Your wedding photos are going to be a long term memento of your special day so you want them to turn out just right. Of course you’ll have ideas of what you want for your photos – and so will your photographer…
Make sure your photographer is considerate of what you want and doesn’t just try and push you into their idea of what your photos should be like.
A great wedding photographer is cheerful, friendly and easy going. They’ll make you feel comfortable as they work with you and draw out the best from you so you’ll get the photos you dreamed of for your wedding.
You want your wedding photos to be special. If snapshots would do you’d just ask your Uncle Bill to take some happy snaps with his compact camera instead of paying thousands of dollars for a professional wedding photographer.
But not all wedding photographers are equally skilled so before you start shopping around on price make sure you look at a number of portfolios. When you begin looking at portfolios and examples of the work of various photographers you’ll see that the standard and quality of photography can vary enormously from one photographer to another.
The work of a great wedding photographer will demonstrate a personal style and creativity that elevates the photos beyond just glorified snapshots. Look for a photographer whose work shows a strong element of creativity rather than just the standard shots and poses and whose personal style resonates with you and the look you want.
Especially consider the environment where you plan to have your photography done. With so many stunning outdoor settings available on the Central Coast many couples have their photos taken at the beaches, lakes or lookouts. There’s no point choosing a wedding photographer just because their portfolio is full of amazing church interior shots if you’re having a beach wedding!
You might think that because it’s your wedding, you’re going to be in all the photos and you’re paying all this money that you’ll get all the original files so you can print all the photos you like…and you may be wrong.
Some wedding photographers keep the original files and you need to order all the prints from them unless you pay an extra (and sometimes large amount) over and above the standard package cost for them to release the files to you.
You may be happy with this arrangement but if you’d prefer the flexibility and independence of having all the original files in your possession then you need to clarify exactly what the package includes with your photographer. Don’t make any assumptions here as you can be easily caught out.
Having the original files in your possession means you can print any photo you like and just pay for the printing costs rather than the photographers retail mark up if you had to order through them. Just be sure to make a back up and preferably keep it somewhere else like your parents place or a friends house just in case!
Once the big day is over all you’re going to have is memories and the photos so your photo album is going to be a big consideration.
Most wedding photographers include an album in their package and you want to be clear exactly what kind of album you’re getting with the photos. Look for a good quality album that will look great, last a long, long time and will also protect your photos. There are many options available and your wedding photographer may be able to offer you upgrade options if you want more pages or a higher quality album.
Be sure to look at some albums your photographer has done for other weddings they’ve shot so you can see the quality of their work. A wedding album is not like a photo album of snapshots and with a bit of creative flair they can look like a real work of art. A lot of thought and design work can go into the layout of such an album and it’s important to know that your photographer can deliver an excellent result.
As a side note – if you’re on a budget and have a creative flair you may even consider just paying the photographer to shoot the photos and doing the album yourself. There are a number of online services that can deliver outstanding quality photo books that are perfect for wedding photo albums.
That said, it’s a big job to do the album yourself and the required software can have a steep learning curve so if the budget allows it’ll be much easier to leave it to the photographer.
Some photographers have people trained in graphic design who put the albums together for them and this shows in the quality of the finished product.
Choosing your wedding photographer is a big thing so take your time and don’t rush the choice. Make sure you’re 100% comfortable with the photographer and the package you’re purchasing before you go ahead and sign anything or pay a deposit.
Hopefully the above tips will help you make the right choice and if you’re looking for local wedding photographers who live on the Central Coast and are familiar with local locations then why not start with a quick search in FindMyLocal.com.au? You’ll find many of them are listed there and you can click through to their websites to see samples of their work.
