Registering With The Tax Office

Now, you’ve started your business and formed a company, sole trader or partnership. Your next step is to register with the tax office.

A number of factors will determine what you need to register for:

  1. Are you a company, Sole Trader or Partnership?
  2. Are you going to register for GST?
  3. Are you going to have staff?

What this means is that depending on your situation, you may need to register for an:

  1. ABN (Australian Business Number)
  2. TFN (Tax File Number)
  3. GST (Goods & Services Tax)
  4. PAYG Witholding (Pay-As-You-Go)

The biggest challenge is to know what you need to register for. Registering with the tax office is actually very simple. To make an online application, click here. The application process coaches you through and allows you to register for all 4 items above.

Because everyone’s situation is different and this is a matter relating to the tax office, I can’t provide any advice about what you need to do. If you need more information about what you need to register for, head to the ATO website.

If you don’t register for everything when you first fill out your application, it’s not a drama, you can always log back onto the site to update your details or apply for other registrations.
