Registering the Business: Forming a Company

So then, you’ve decided that your business will be setup as a company. Where to from here?

There are 3 main avenues for starting a company:

  1. Start the company yourself by filling in all the government paperwork
  2. Use an online service
  3. Get an Accountant or Solicitor to set one up for you

If you want to go it alone it can mean reasonable cost savings for you. Though if you’ve never started a company before, I don’t recommend this path. You’ve got a lot of other things to learn and master that are much more important than filling out government forms. To go down this path I recommend you follow the steps outlined on the ASIC website here.

Your other option is to go to one of the many online startup companies. They cost around $500-600 and setup your company instantly. The other benefit is that they fill out and send you all necessary forms required by law. This way is cheap and quick. Just do a search in Google for “Register a company” and plenty of services will come up.

Your final option is to go through a solicitor or accountant. This is the most expensive way of starting a company but is definitely the most comprehensive. If you’ve never started a business before, this is definitely the best and most reassuring way of starting a company. If you are just starting out, talk to your local BEC as they may be able to put you in touch with a reputable solicitor or accountant.
